Final Thoughts
Mon, Dec 29
On the way from Copan to the airport in San Pedro we stopped at a little place to grab breakfast. Jianyun saw this in the toilet, and apparently the translation of the exchange goes something like this:
Boy:
You don't have what I have.Girl:
No, but with what I have, I can get plenty of what you have.Ah. Truth.
The Weather
There were only two days of our stay in Honduras when it didn't rain. The first day of blue skies and sunshine was the one we should have spent at Punta Sal and which was instead stolen by food poisoning. The second day the sun was out in full force was our last day and driving down the winding mountain roads away from Copan, the bus' rear view mirror showed nothing but clear blue sky. Even its yellow paint seemed to glow. Travel can be funny like that.
Despite the lack of co-operation from the weather which threw our carefully planned itinerary out the window, I enjoyed myself. We had to give jungle trekking and fishing in Cozuna a miss, but on hindsight that probably kept me alive. I felt the "mosquito canary" for most of the trip - I'm just a magnet for mosquitos and biting insects, which makes me a good early warning system when bugs attack.
Highlights
In the end we spent a lot of time in Triunfo de la Cruz experiencing the Garifuna way of life and customs. Spending Christmas in the village was unique and quite an eye-opener. After all, in 7 months I'll be back in the army so that takes care of the jungle experience.
Unforgettable moments include Jianyun receiving Fausto's present of a pair of shorts, Jianyun dancing with the punta performers and once again Jianyun getting whisked away by Fausto for a dance. Huh...now it sounds like she had all the fun!
Already people are asking me, "why Honduras?" Because this is when I should be stepping out of my comfort zone and heading off to less common destinations, before my arthritic knees creak with every step.
Will I go back? Probably not. There are so many places I haven't been. But I'll never forget my 2 weeks in Honduras when my legs got horribly disfigured by 100 mosquito and sandfly bites. Tranquilo baby!
